This wasn’t the actual front page headline in the Mid Wales Journal this week although I’m sure the editor must have been sorely tempted, no the real headline was “IN THE DARK OVER LIGHTS SWITCH OFF!”
The story is about Powys County Council’s decision to switch off two in every three street lights in non sensitive areas in order to fund massive energy price increases. In the story, the council claims that this action will cut the council’s carbon footprint by up to 1100 tonnes per year and reduce the light pollution in the night sky. The switch off began last Monday.
Councillor Gary Price, who seems to object to almost everything his council does these days, and after having walked through Trefonnen and around the lake on Monday, is quoted as saying “I felt really scared… I went to the lake and I fear for anyone walking around there after dark, it’s pitch black.”
This is a man who, like some of his fellow postmen, likes to wear his shorts through the winter just to show how hard he is. The ladies of Llandrindod must be asking themselves where all the ‘real men’ have gone?
On a more serious note, Councillor Price might wish to reflect on what sort of image he presents of the town of Llandrindod with inane comments like this? Perhaps the electors of Llandrindod East-West ought to consider finding someone with a little more courage to represent them at the next council elections.

we believe cllr price is making considered points to an issue that has already attracted huge attention and reaction especially in llandrindod.
whatever your personal grievances you must agree that this inititive has been poorly executed by the council.
it would of been much beter intiated during the'summer' months as it is lighter for longer and would have had less of an impact than the dark poorly weathered september we are experiencing.
We like many others voted for the inititive although we were under the impression that the lighting would be switched off at specific times or by a timer and not the 'blanket' blackout that we are experiencing.
the current situation whilst ecologically admirable is an accident waiting to happen.
As for the warders finding someone with more courage to vote for instead of cllr price!
he is very popular with a lot of his electors as he has a proven track record of successes and does not have to toe the party line like some others.
What precisely are you and he afraid of? Of course he is popular, he seeks to undermine almost everything his council does. With two salaries he can afford to pay the inevitable increase in council tax that wasting money on excessive street lighting implies. Some of us really do appreciate the current reduction in light pollution.
but it may depend on exactly where you live!!!
if you live in leafy lakeside, which has no through traffic then there is less risk, indeed was a risk assesment carried out,im sure when the first claim is lodged for negligence there will be a standard proceedure to follow in its investigation of an accident or other incident.
those who live in the more populated areas such as trefonnen may have a different opinion towards safety especially in light,oh dear, of the recent accident at caroline morris' house which by the way happened in broad daylight but which could of caused a fatality!!!
there are other areas in the town that could meet the enviro needs rather than residential areas especially after dark such as aldis car park which may also prevent the boy racers bi weekly speed runs, powys car park, the far end of the hospital car park to name three.
